FAQ

Give Back Health Clinic Collection Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is a practitioner-only nutritional supplement that provides 100% pure medicine-grade NR. It comes in powder form and is designed for extemporaneous compounding and prescribing under practitioner supervision.

Give Back Health Clinic Collection Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is a practitioner-only extemporaneous compounding product. This means it’s designed to be prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional who will guide the dosage based on your individual needs. The product is not intended for self-prescription. Additionally, this therapeutic category means we are unable to provide further info to the public about its benefits and application.

As this is a practitioner-only extemporaneous compounding product, we're unable to share detailed information about its benefits or specific uses with the general public. For personalised advice, please speak with a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Give Back Health Clinic Collection Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is manufactured and tested in TGA-registered GMP facilities here in Australia, ensuring high standards of quality, safety and efficacy. Every product, every batch, with no exceptions. This means the included ingredients are what they claim to be and the products are therefore more likely to have an actual therapeutic impact. This process also prevents counterfeit and adulterated materials from entering the market. While it adds significantly to our costs, we believe this level of integrity should be the industry standard. This is particularly relevant in the NAD+ market where we have seen results of products claiming to be NR or NMN that show only minimal amounts of the active (or in some cases, a completely different ingredient overall). Please note that we absorb the extra expense ourselves; it is not passed on to you.

The NR we use is the chloride form (nicotinamide riboside chloride) as this is the only one approved by the TGA for us in Australia. Additionally, it is vegan and 100% pure medicine-grade NR.

This is 100% pure, authenticated NR and the same NR used in human clinical trials. As well as manufacturing in TGA-registered GMP medicine facilities, we also third-party test our NR to ensure the material is as expected. This is a process we do with all our powders, and is particularly relevant to NR (and also NMN) where a growing amount of counterfeit or sub-standard material has entered the market in recent years. We want you to be confident that you're taking what you believe you're taking and it is the best quality material available.

Check the Free Froms & Allergy Info above for more details.

NR has been reported by the expert scientific ESFA panel as being appropriate for use during pregnancy and lactation up to 230 mg. However, as individual health needs can vary, we strongly recommend speaking with your healthcare practitioner if you have any questions, particularly if you’re unsure whether this product is right for you. They’ll be best placed to provide guidance that considers your full health picture. It’s also best practice to check in with your practitioner about any supplements or medicines you’re taking, especially in the first trimester, to ensure they’re appropriate for your specific circumstances.

NR has a distinct chloride flavour profile. Many people take it with other prescribed supplements such as NAC or Multi VMN, or mix it into juice. Others prefer a quick shot followed by something more pleasant tasting. Ultimately, NR is a medicine and the benefits (and value) of taking it in powder form far outweigh the brief moment it takes to drink it.

Practitioner FAQs

Give Back Health Clinic Collection Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is a practitioner-only nutritional supplement that provides authenticated vegan and 100% pure medicine-grade NR. It comes in powder form and is designed for extemporaneous compounding and prescribing under practitioner supervision. NR is the #1 NAD+ precursor. It provides the body with NAD+, which can be used in an extensive range of metabolic processes.

  • Nicotinamide riboside chloride (NRC) the main form of nicotinamide riboside (NR) and is commonly referred to as NR.
  • Nicotinamide riboside chloride (NRC) is the only form of NR currently approved for use in Australia by the TGA.
  • NR is the NAD+ precursor with multiple global safety profiles (GRAS and ESFA).
  • NR is the NAD+ precursor reported by the expert scientific ESFA panel as being safe for use during pregnancy and lactation up to 230 mg.
  • NR increases NAD+ levels to prevent, delay, or improve NAD+ dependent aging mechanisms, thereby helping to prevent, delay, or improve the seven diseases of aging. Increases are dose dependant (the more you take the more NAD+ increases, with studies commonly at 500 mg - 1000 mg for best results).
  • NR shows a high degree of promise in preconception care, metabolic disorders, chronic disease, energy optimisation and healthy ageing.
  • NR supplementation has been shown to increase NAD+ by approximately 60%.
  • NR supports healthy ageing and longevity.
  • NR supports nervous system health and increases neuronal NAD+ concentrations.
  • Powder form allows for personalised dosing.
  • NR increases NAD+ levels to prevent, delay, or improve NAD+ dependent aging mechanisms, thereby helping to prevent, delay, or improve the seven diseases of aging.

It is understood that (unlike NMN, which has to first convert to NR), NR can directly cross the cell membrane before converting to NMN and finally to NAD+ where it provides its beneficial effects, including to mitochondrial function, DNA repair, gene expression and genetic stability. This more direct access into the cell means that it removes one rate-limiting step in the abosorption process.

Preconception

  • Compared with placebo, oral NR supplementation effectively elevated levels of NAD+ in circulating peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) by ~60%.
  • NAD+ and related metabolites declines in humans during normal ageing. This reduces the activity of NAD+ dependent sirtuins which play a critical role in genomic stability, DNA replication and energy metabolism.
  • The beneficial effects of sirtuin activity are only achieved if NAD+ levels are optimal as they are NAD+ dependent sirtuins.

Energy Optimisation

  • NAD+ plays a key role in energy pathways including fatty acidoxidation & the citric acid cycle.
  • NAD+ is a physiological regulator of adipose tissue function and insulin sensitivity, which are involved in appetite regulation and are essential for fat metabolism, storage and utilisation as energy.
  • Detoxification has a high energy requirement. NR is an effective NAD+ precursor, which promotes ATP for use in the body.
  • The reduced form of NAD+, NADPH, is essential for the biosynthesis of several major antioxidants including glutathione.

Healthy Ageing

  • NR increases NAD+ levels to prevent, delay, or improve NAD+ dependent aging mechanisms, thereby helping to prevent, delay, or improve the seven diseases of aging.
  • Compared with placebo, oral NR supplementation effectively elevated levels of NAD+ in circulating peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) by ~60%.
  • The cellular bioavailability of NAD+ and related metabolites declines in humans during normal ageing. This reduces the activity of NAD+ dependent sirtuins which play a critical role in genomic stability and energy metabolism.
  • The beneficial effects of sirtuin activity are only achieved if NAD+ levels are optimal as they are NAD+ dependent sirtuins.
  • NR supports healthy ageing and longevity.
  • NR supports nervous system health and increases neuronal NAD+ concentrations.

See factsheet for specific scientific findings and a full list of references.
See NMN VS NR Research Highlights for a complete overview of both these NAD+ precursors.

Preconception

  • Oral NR is effectively absorbed and metabolically active.
  • Increases NAD+ which is required for accurate DNA replication and maintaining a viable pregnancy.
  • NR is the mitochondrially favoured NAD+ precursor.
  • Up-regulating the activity of NAD+ dependent sirtuins benefits both male and female fertility in animal models and in vitro (human and animal cells) research.
  • Optimal NAD+ levels are considered highly clinically relevant for both sperm parameters and oocyte quality.

Energy Optimisation

  • Becoming overweight or obese is associated with declining levels of NAD+.
  • Metabolic disorders (including obesity and T2DM) are associated with a reduced expression of the NAD+ dependent enzymes SIRT1 and 2 due to insufficient quantities of NAD+.
  • Upregulation of NAD+ synthesis can influence metabolic processes regulated by sirtuins.
  • Supplementation of NR in healthy overweight/obese participants resulted in increased metabolism of lipids and reduced fat mass.

Healthy Ageing

  • The reduced form of NAD+, NADPH, is an essential coenzyme for several major antioxidants including glutathione.
  • A study of healthy older men found supplementation of NR reduced circulating inflammatory cytokines.
  • Cognitive decline is associated with oxidative stress and DNA damage.
  • Animal studies indicate a potential role for NR in the prevention of cognitive decline and neuro-degeneration.
  • NAD depletion is implicated in the pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, cardiovascular disease and neuromuscular diseases in animal models.
  • NR shown to decrease aortic stiffness and systolic blood pressure (SBP) when compared to placebo
  • NR supplementation shown to improve resistance to fatigue in older individuals.
  • Orally administered NR shown to
augment neuronal NAD+ levels and modify biomarkers related to neurodegenerative pathology in humans.
  • NR shown to increase cerebral NAD levels.
  • Males and females as part of preconception care.
  • Those undertaking assisted fertility.
  • People seeking more energy/improvements in mitochondrial health.
  • People with metabolic syndromes.
  • People with exposure to toxins (lifestyle or occupational).
  • Individuals wishing to optimise wellness and healthy ageing.
  • People with chronic or degenerative conditions, including neurodegeneration.
  • Suitable for children 12+, adults and older adults.
  • When trying to conceive (natural and assisted).
  • Fertility and reproductive health optimisation.
  • To combat age related decline in NAD+ synthesis (which reduces fertility).
  • Non-specific energy decline.
  • Insulin resistance.
  • Metabolic health.
  • As part of detoxification programs.
  • To support wellness and healthy ageing.
  • Chronic conditions mediated by high oxidative stress.
  • During chronic inflammation.
  • Prevention of neurodegeneration and in mild cognitive decline.
  • To increase NAD+ levels to prevent, delay, or improve NAD+ dependent aging mechanisms, thereby helping to prevent, delay, or improve the seven diseases of aging.

When selecting a NR product, key factors include ingredient form, clinical dosing, purity, excipient profile and manufacturing standards. This product has been specifically developed for practitioner use and compounding, with:

  • High-quality, verified raw materials with full traceability.
This is 100% pure NR powder for personalised dosing or compounding.
  • Manufacturing in a TGA-licensed GMP facility in Australia.

  • Rigorous third-party testing to ensure potency, purity and absence of contaminants.
This is particularly relevant in the NAD+ market where we have seen results of products claiming to be NR or NMN that show only minimal amounts of the active (or in some cases, a completely different ingredient overall).

In short, yes. Powders for extemporaneous compounding sit in a unique therapeutic category with its own set of rules. When you choose to use a compounding powder, the expectation is that you will be combining this with other therapeutic nutrients and ingredients to create a personalised medicine. Single ingredient prescribing is, however, possible with extemporaneous compounding ingredients with best practice to ensure that the amount of product in the jar represents the full course for the patient. The quantity of any ingredient you use will be calculated in relation to the prescription length and daily required dose, which is completely specific to an individual patient’s presentation and needs.

None to note. NR is well tolerated in clinical trials.

NR has been reported by the expert scientific ESFA panel as being safe for use during pregnancy and lactation up to 230 mg.

  • The common range for NR is 250 mg – 1,000 mg per day. It is generally well tolerated at these levels. Benefits are shown to be dose dependent (the higher the dose, the better the results).
  • As NR can be very strong tasting – particularly at higher doses – it can be preferable to either take it mixed with juice or a sulpher based supplement (e.g. NAC or or Multi VMN – although they both have a sulphury profile, the sulfite free orange flavour balances it well and both ingredients provide a lot of benefits in many instances.). Alternatively, take in a short glass with a small amount of water as a quick shot.
  • Without knowing your patient’s presentation and requirements, we cannot provide guidelines around appropriate daily dosing and suggest you refer to the literature and common dosage ranges when creating your prescription. Our team of naturopaths are also available for further guidance.

Results are generally seen within 1-2 weeks, with further improvement by 6-12 weeks.

This is a clean formula with 100% pure and authenticated NR powder.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is an essential molecule that plays a critical role in almost every metabolic process in the body. Through its roles as a cofactor, electron donor and signalling molecule, NAD+ is essential for many biological processes. These include ATP synthesis, DNA repair, secondary messenger signalling, epigenetic regulation of gene expression and cell survival. NAD+ naturally declines with age. The gradual decline of NAD+ concentrations takes place across multiple human organs and tissues, including skin, blood, liver, muscles and brain. Reduced concentration of NAD+ results in suboptimal functioning of the NAD+ dependent pathways. This in turn results in an increase in issues relating to metabolic function, inflammation, senescence and degeneration of the nervous system. When NAD+ dependent mechanism are compromised, diseases of ageing are then more likely to occur. By increasing NAD+ and therefore increasing the activity of the NAD-dependent processes, we can help prevent, delay or improve the NAD+ mechanisms of ageing. In doing so, we can prevent, delay or improve the seven diseases of ageing.

The NR has a characteristic chloride flavour profile due to a chloride molecule attached to the NR (Nincotinamide riboside chloride). This is one reason why some people might choose NMN over NR when looking for an NAD+ precursor (as NMN has a far more benign profile). Both ingredients increase NAD+ and many people take them both together for a more sustained effect.
