Nurtures the nervous system and balances mood

  • Provides antioxidant effects.
  • Provides anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Provides serotoninergic effects.
  • Provides HPA modulating effects.
  • Provides neuroprotective effects.
  • Saffron downregulates HPA activity; a mechanism likely to reduce the effects of stress.
  • Extensive research into saffron's constituents, especially safranal, crocin, crocetin, and picrocrocin, consistently demonstrate a range of synergistic biological activities supportive of mental health. These actions include anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive, and sedative actions. Memory-enhancing and neuroprotective effects were also observed.
  • Saffron inhibits the re-uptake of several neurotransmitters including serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine in animal models of depression.
  • Saffron reduces symptoms of premenstrual syndrome including anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance and pain.

Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory

  • Saffron constituents safranal and crocetin bind to acetyl-cholinesterase inhibiting it’s activity; pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease act via a similar mechanism.
  • Zinc is critical to brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF), which promotes neurogenesis and neuroplasticity; vital to maintaining cognitive funciton.
  • Saffron constituents include crocin, crocetin, zeaxanthin, lycopene and α and β carotenes which have antioxidant, anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory actions.

Vital role in the nervous system function

  • The relationship between zinc and depression may be linked to its action on brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF), which promotes neurogenesis and differentiation.
  • Zinc modulates NMDA receptor activation sensitivity.

  • Provides neuroprotective effects.
  • Double-blind, randomised placebo-controlled trials of healthy adults, including young adults, experiencing low mood report significant benefits, compared to placebo in mood, and resilience to stress.
  • Saffron was found to significantly reduce symptoms of mild to moderate depression compared to placebo in a systematic review of double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials and
    non-inferior to two SSRIs.
  • Saffron found to significantly reduce PMS symptoms, particularly of depression in well- designed double blind, placebo controlled clinical trials.

Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory

  • Both zinc and saffron are potent antioxidants. Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative conditions.
  • Saffron and crocin have been shown to prevent oxidative stress in the hippocampus and protect against learning and memory deficits.
  • A systematic review of small clinical trials found saffron to be a promising option in mild cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Saffron was as effective as common pharmaceuticals on cognition and functional status and superior to placebo in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
  • A systematic review of the effect of saffron on subclinical inflammation found a significant reduction in serum CRP & TNF- in those with relatively high baseline levels.

Vital role in the nervous system function

  • Zinc is integral to nervous system development, maintenance and normal function.
  • Zinc is associated with emotional balance. It is maintained at high levels within glutamatergic neurons in the limbic system, acting as an inhibitory modulator.
  • Zinc absorption is impacted by ageing, impaired gastrointestinal function and by commonly used medications (oral hypoglycaemics, antacids, anti-inflammatories and others).
  • A meta-analysis confirmed that serum zinc levels are lower in people with symptoms of depression compared to healthy controls.
  • People in emotional and mental vulnerability.
  • People experiencing low mood or adjunct to treatment for depression.
  • People experiencing poor quality sleep.
  • Women who experience PMS.
  • People seeking to optimise their health/healthy ageing.
  • People with chronic health conditions, both mental and physical associated with oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • People with concentration and memory issues.
  • People with low zinc in their diet, such as older adults, vegetarians and vegans.
  • People with high alcohol intake.
  • People with underlying gastro-intestinal (GIT) disorders.
  • Adolescents and adults.
  • When feeling emotionally or mentally vulnerable.
  • When experiencing low mood or anxiety.
  • When stress is affecting mood balance.
  • Prevention of cognitive deterioration secondary to stress.
  • When sleep quality is compromised by low mood, anxiety or stress.
  • To support wellness and healthy ageing.
  • Prevention of mild cognitive decline especially when associated with stress.
  • In chronic conditions mediated by oxidative stress causing inflammation.
  • During depression and/or anxiety; these conditions are strong predictors of chronic illness.
